Chapter 33

Keith

I was sitting in my office, trying to focus on work, but I was struggling, since I just didn’t want to be here. The urge to go to the club and get something to drink to curb this craziness in my head was strong.

I was trying to avoid people at all costs today. I wanted to call out of work, but that was not something that I did. I toughed it out. I put in the work, and I didn’t shy away from a challenge.

The challenge that Kingston had presented to me was different, though. I was in new territory. I wasn’t used to compromising. Was what Kingston offering me a real deal?

A knock on the door jarred me from my thoughts.

“Come in,” I said against my wishes, since I really wanted to be left alone.

“Hey, boo,” Jennifer said as she came into my office. She sat down in one of my chairs, as she usually did.

“How are you today?” I asked, trying to fake enthusiasm. I really didn’t have time for playfulness today. My future was at stake. My dignity was on the line.

“My feelings are hurt.” She pouted.

“Why?” I asked.

“Kingston has not being paying any attention to me.”

“Why do you think that is?” I asked. I knew why now, but she didn’t need to know. I didn’t think that she could handle the truth. I was still processing it myself.

“I don’t know. He talks to me about work, but that is as far as it goes. I mean, I come in here with my best outfits on, which are tight and hug my body, and he doesn’t make a pass at me at all. I mean, like, none.” She looked at me like I had answers, but I didn’t want to provide them. I wanted to tell her she was shaking the wrong tree, but I didn’t.

“Maybe he is married,” I suggested.

“But he doesn’t have on a wedding ring.”

“Everyone doesn’t have to wear a wedding ring.”

“That’s crazy.” She waved her hand, dismissing my suggestion. “He’s probably scared of all this hot fire underneath these clothes.”

“That could be it too. You are rocking that outfit.” It was true. But it didn’t really matter to me. I just wanted to move the conversation closer to its end.

“See? Even you see it, and you are gay. What’s wrong with me? I’m hot and fabulous. All day.” She laughed.

I just smiled. “Maybe you are trying too hard. Maybe he is waiting to make his move on you, and you keep missing it.”

“You know, Keith, that is possible. It could be that I’ve been too aggressive.”

“You know, he may be trying to keep it professional too. He just got here, and his focus may be on work and doing his job,” I stated.

“I am so glad that you are in my corner. I don’t have to compete with you, and you give out sound advice. You get me to look at the whole picture. I appreciate that.”

“That’s what friends are for,” I reminded her.
